GB/T 151-2026 Takes Effect: Key Standard Updates for Global Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Specifiers
The revised Chinese national standard GB/T 151-2026 Heat Exchangers officially took effect on August 1, 2026, replacing the 2014 edition. This standard sets brand-new benchmarks for design, safety and energy efficiency of shell and tube heat exchangers.

For global EPC firms, plant operators and international procurement teams sourcing Chinese-manufactured thermal equipment, understanding GB/T 151-2026 is critical for project specification, tender evaluation and cross-border equipment acceptance.
Shell and tube heat exchangers represent the largest product category in the worldwide heat-transfer equipment market, contributing approximately 33% of total global market revenue in 2025. They are widely used in petrochemical, oil & gas, power generation, new-energy and water-treatment processes under high-temperature, high-pressure and corrosive working conditions.
GB/T 151-2026 governs the full product lifecycle of shell and tube heat exchangers: material selection, structural layout, thermal-mechanical calculation, fabrication, inspection, acceptance, installation and operational maintenance.
One major highlight is Annex B, which introduces formal energy-efficiency testing and evaluation procedures for shell-and-tube units. Paired with GB/T 47007-2026, the dedicated energy-efficiency standard for plate heat exchangers, it establishes a unified domestic performance-assessment system for China’s two dominant heat-exchanger product lines. The industry focus is shifting from pure mechanical safety toward combined safety-and-energy-efficiency compliance.
Important technical revisions include the new TI-grade high-precision tube bundle for severe-duty applications with corrosion, high pressure and frequent cycling. Updated tube-sheet strength calculation models and enhanced fluid-induced vibration assessment reduce long-term operational failure risks. Strengthened clauses cover over-pressure protection, corrosion mitigation and welding quality control.
Newly designed shell-and-tube projects built to Chinese standards must follow the updated calculation logic, performance verification and acceptance rules. Energy-efficiency metrics now join pressure and temperature as core procurement evaluation items.
An official English translation of GB/T 151-2026 is available for international stakeholders. Global buyers can reference this updated standard when evaluating Chinese-supplied shell and tube heat exchangers, helping to align technical requirements, streamline third-party inspection and raise confidence for cross-border industrial projects.
